Project win: Exeter air quality assessment

22 August 2014

Aether was asked to undertake an air quality assessment for a proposed large supermarket development in Exeter. Exeter City Council declared an Air Quality Management Area in 2007 for the annual mean nitrogen dioxide objective, which covers all of the main traffic routes in the city. A second Air Quality Action Plan was published in 2012 and this includes a project to establish a Low Emission Strategy for the city.

The study assessed the impact of the additional traffic generated by the site on local nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter concentrations and advised whether any mitigation was required. The study site was located outside the Exeter AQMA areas, but it was important that the impact was assessed to ensure that a significant worsening of air quality did not occur.
