Air Quality Assessment for the proposed development Abbey Road, Barking

29 August 2018

Aether has recently completed an air quality assessment for a proposed mixed use development to provide retail space and residential space at the former Abbey Road Retail Park in Barking.

Located just 200m from a section of the North Circular (A406) in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham an air quality assessment was required to ensure protection of future residents against poor air quality. The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD), has also declared the whole borough an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) in 2008 due to exceedances of annual mean NO2, hourly mean NO2 and daily mean PM10 objective.

The assessment used the dispersion model ADMS roads to assess the pollutant concentrations both without and with development. No exceedances of the air quality objectives were predicted, however Aether suggested various mitigation measures which may be implemented in order to minimise the development's impact on local air quality. It was also recommended that a travel plan is considered to reduce emissions arising from the site by providing secure and covered cycle storage, car share schemes, and installing an electric charging point.
