Public Sector Carbon Accounting in Wales

08 February 2019

Aether and Carbon Forecast are pleased to be working with Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to support the development of a comprehensive, fit for purpose carbon accounting system for the public sector in Wales. The Welsh Government funded project will review the standards and approaches available for carbon accounting and assess their comprehensiveness in covering different emission sources and sinks, their usability and their suitability for use in a public sector context. It is part of a package of work being undertaken by NRW to support the Welsh Government’s ambition for a carbon neutral Welsh public sector by 2030 and follows on from the ground-breaking Carbon Positive Project, which provided a highly detailed account of NRW’s carbon balance. The project will run in the first few months of 2019 and will review around 25 standards and approaches in use in the UK and internationally, grading them according to a series of criteria developed with NRW and the Welsh Government.

This assessment, together with evidence on current reporting practices among Welsh public bodies, will inform recommendations on an appropriate reporting regime to measure progress towards carbon neutrality.
