Dumfries and Galloway Council routes to net zero

16 December 2021

Earlier this year Aether worked with Dumfries and Galloway Council to support their Carbon Neutral Strategic Plan. We calculated the baseline (2018) GHG emissions for the Council and district and produced an emission trajectory illustrating the effect of potential interventions on these emissions. The scope of emissions included buildings, transport, waste, agriculture and land use. A range of interventions were included such as policies to reduce emissions from livestock, decarbonisation of heating, and enabling electric vehicle uptake. Modelling showed that there are significant challenges for meeting the Council’s net zero target of 2025.

Their Carbon Neutral Strategic Plan can be found on the Council website, which includes our trajectories.

We are currently providing an update to this work by using 2019 data to monitor progress on carbon reduction and reconnecting with local stakeholders to understand how plans are developing.
