Capacity Building

Building local technical knowledge and experience

Compiling a national greenhouse gas inventory is essential for a country to understand its emissions sources; for many countries it is an activity that they have only recently started undertaking. Capacity building training is an important way of supporting these national compilation teams in establishing a high quality inventory. Aether has a broad range of experienced inventory experts skilled in mentoring and knowledge sharing; we have conducted capacity building training for a range of stakeholders and numbers of participants, from small inventory teams to large scale capacity building projects with over 50 participants, including academics and government officials.

Training and mentoring

Aether provides tailored training programmes, building on any pre-existing training and experience, with material covering both sector-specific and cross-cutting inventory topics. Training sessions can be adapted to be an appropriate level to both technical and non-technical audiences, which is critical in promoting the importance of the inventory to key stakeholders such as data providers.

As part of the capacity building training programme, sector experts from Aether provide mentoring to national counterparts in the inventory team, working collaboratively to produce an inventory. This mentoring approach enables the inventory team to learn in a practical manner and supports them in taking ownership of the national inventory. Aether delivers in-country, virtual and flexible hybrid capacity building programs; the latter becoming increasingly essential as the global health crisis continues.

Case studies

LULUCF GHG Inventory Support for Romania

Aether is supporting the Romanian National Research and Development Institute for Cryogenic and Isotopic Technologies (ICSI) in the compilation of its national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory for non-forest land areas. We are helping to ensure that Romania’s land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) inventory is robust and of high quality.

GHG inventory support for Estonia

Aether is supporting the Estonian Environmental Research Centre (EKUK) and Estonian Environment Agency (EstEA) in the development of its national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory templates. We are helping to ensure that the compilation process is transparent and efficient.
