Analysing Air Pollution in London

17 May 2016

Aether was commissioned by the GLA in 2013 to analyse data on air pollution exposure in London.  Aether’s report has been published by the GLA. The purpose of the report was to examine the variations in exposure to air pollution across the social spectrum in 2010. It found that people living in the most deprived areas were disproportionately more exposed to poor air quality than people living in less deprived areas.

Our analysis also found that of the 1777 primary schools in London, 433 were in locations where average air pollution exceeded the EU limit value for NO2, above which concentrations are known to cause health impacts.  Of these 433 schools, 82% were defined as deprived schools.

We recommended that actions are required to reduce air pollution in London and in particular to focus on reducing the inequality in access to clean air.
